Artist Statement

Colors in the environment surrounding an individual have a significant impact on the mood the individual. In order to convey the shift in mood when colors change, I wanted to portray the changes in attitude as the seasons change. When it gets colder outside, the leaves fall off of the trees and the world outside turns grey. The environment turns dull and lifeless as the temperature drops. The opposite effect occurs when the temperature outside gets warmer. As temperature increases, the overall mood and perspective of people tends to become more positive.

In order to convey the change in mood as temperature changes, I used my mom to model the seasons. I combined spring and summer into one warm season because there are generally positive perspectives through both spring and summer. In the image that represents autumn, I added a bright scarf and brought out the red tones in the image to convey the comfort and joy that the bright colors of the leaves bring. The model is smiling and throwing leaves to portray the childish feeling of playful excitement that comes with this season. In the image that represents winter, I used a black coat and a dead bush in the background to emphasize the feeling of lifelessness that comes when the leaves fall off the tree and the colors disappear around the world. The model is looking at the ground with a solemn expression on her face to portray her lack of joy and energy as a result of her environment. In the last image, which represents both spring and summer, I brought out the green tones, emphasizing the content feeling that comes when flowers bloom and it gets warm outside. My mom is smiling and smelling the leaves of the tree to convey the content feeling that flowers, warmth, and leaves bring.
