Artist Statement
People can become consumed by a large amount of things. I wanted to portray how some thoughts and ideas can become stuck in someone's mind. In order to portray this idea, I portrayed a woman looking at a board of "evidence", not being able to solve a mystery. When a person encounters a problem, it becomes all that is on their mind until the problem is resolved. In this image, the problem is the mystery the woman is trying to solve and she is consumed with solving the mystery. In order to move on from the thoughts that are consuming her, she makes an evidence board to organize her thoughts and think through the mystery.
In this image, I made the mystery unknown, as the viewer can interpret the crime as something minor or serious depending on what is important to them. This allows the reader to connect more with the image, as the mystery can be based upon something that is important to them, giving them the ability to understand that woman's consumption. The woman is wearing all black to portray the lack of direction and hope that she has as she looks at the evidence in front of her. Her hands are on her hips to signify her confusion and frustration at what she sees. The evidence is connected using bright colored lines because they jump out at the viewer and emphasize the chaotic relationships between each piece of evidence. The chaotic feeling helps the reader understand the consuming feeling of having many thoughts concerning small pieces of a larger concept.
